About

Back in the early 80’s Craig Simpson, Gordon Slattery and Gary Poulton (myself) reunited in Bathurst and formed Hardwood Falls. Twenty eight years later people are still asking after the group so we’re putting together this sort of ‘story of the band’ blogsite. Heaven only knows what will end up here, I scare myself just thinking about it.

In the band’s heyday we covered songs by The Amazing Rythm Aces, Linda Rondstatd, The Eagles, Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Bob Dylan, Bruce Cockburn, The Police, Yes, The Band, Crosby Still and Nash, James Taylor, Willis Alan Ramsey, Jackson Browne, Jim Post, Doobie Brothers and America etc along with a very extensive collection of originals.

  1. You know, this started off as a fleeting notion to somehow mark the phenomenon of our time writing and playing music together under a number of names: the Arc, Hardwood Falls, A Book for Boys, then under various combinations of two of us, and then individually with others.
It has always surprised me how often people will approach me to ask after the band, after all this time. We thought it might be nice to direct people to a website when they asked after us.

Well that fleeting notion has far outstripped my expectations! It’s worth noting that none of us would’ve believed how much recorded material we actually have, ranging from rough cuts & home demos to polished studio quality. I expected to find maybe 4 or 5 songs but we have spent hours and hours so far going through analogue tapes and we’ve barely scratched the surface!

Little by little our technical wizards will clean these up and post them on the site for you to enjoy as we have.

meanwhile, we’d love to hear from any of you out there who have photos, newspaper cuttings, old posters, videos or recordings from the 1980s that might help to build this site.

And yes, Slim, Gary and I are inspired by all this activity! Stay tuned….Gordon

  2. I am the son of Craig (slim), and it is amazing to look at this site and see all of the great musical stuff my dad used to get up to!
I am really proud and I hope to achieve creative greatness like this one day (it may not be in music but hey, you never know!)
The Hardwood Falls remembrance site should be seen by all family and friends of the people involved in the musical genius!!!

    • Hi Jackson. NIce to hear from you, We haven’t met yet, but will at some future date no doubt. There’s more to come, we have a few surprises for your dad up our sleeves, so stay tuned. We miss him, they were great times and the three of us working together was an extraordinary experience and both Gordon and I agree that the three of us together were far better than any combination we’ve worked with since. I was just talking to Gordon only 5 min ago and discussing the same thing. You’re lucky to have him as your dad, he has a great heart and is a good man with a generosity of spirit that’s hard to come by these days.
But tell him to get off his butt and start posting, there’s an important voice missing in all these conversations.

  3. Woohoo Jackson!
